Men’s Health Month

June is Men’s Health Month and serves as a reminder to prioritize common health issues affecting men and encourage early detection, healthy habits and regular check-ups.

Statistically, men are more likely than women to skip routine health checkups, engage in riskier behaviors, experience shorter life expectancies and suffer in silence from mental health conditions.

Men are reluctant to seek medical care due to a mix of psychological, cultural and practical barriers. The core issue is that many men are socialized to believe that needing help, especially for health, is a sign of weakness, which leads to delayed care and worse outcomes.

SWLA Center for Health Services is here to break the stigma most men feel when seeking the medical care they need. Our Primary Care providers are here to build trust and normalize preventative care. They also encourage men to adopt healthier habits; such as nutrition guidance, physical activity, weight management, sleep and stress management, smoking and alcohol reduction and more.

Key Health Focus Areas

Heart Disease: Leading cause of death among men; prevention includes regular check-ups, blood pressure and cholesterol monitoring, a heart-healthy diet, and physical activity.

Cancer: Early detection of prostate, testicular and colorectal cancers is critical; screenings and awareness are emphasized.

Mental Health: Men are at higher risk for suicide and often underreport mental health issues; Men’s Health Month encourages open dialogue, support networks, and access to counseling or therapy.

Diabetes: Men may develop type 2 diabetes earlier than women; lifestyle management and regular blood sugar screenings are recommended.

Injury Prevention: Focus on reducing risk-tasking behaviors, promoting safety at work and during recreational activities and preventing accidents.
